Porcelain Veneers

A beautiful smile has the power to give you more confidence, make you appear more out-going, and even make a stranger smile.  If you tend to cover your mouth when you laugh or smile it is hard to send a message of confidence.  Porcelain veneers are a type of dental restoration made of a thin durable, tooth shaped layer of porcelain that is placed over a tooth.  Porcelain veneers are custom-designed for each patient and can dramatically change the appearance of your smile if you have:

  • Broken tooth/teeth
  • Uneven tooth spacing (gaps or crowded teeth)
  • Uneven teeth (different lengths)
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Dullness/discolored/stained teeth
  • Orthodontic alignment (crooked teeth)
  • Misshapen teeth (too larger or too small)
  • Protect surface of damaged tooth

The Process

Porcelain veneers are usually a two visit procedure.  Lafayette Dental Arts starts your custom design by inquiring about your preferences (shape, length, width and color) of desired outcome.

Next a dental examination is performed to determine if there are any oral health problems that must be addressed first, potentially adding to the number of visits required for completion of the porcelain veneers.

Once the custom design and exam is complete, the next step is to prepare the tooth or teeth.  A small amount of tooth is removed to shape the tooth to receive the porcelain veneer.

After the teeth are prepared, the dentist makes a model or impression of your teeth. This model is utilized to construct the custom veneers. It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks for the veneers to be created.  Temporary dental veneers are placed over the teeth.

When the porcelain veneers are ready, they are temporarily placed to examine the fit and color.  The dentist will adjust the shape of the veneer or tooth until the perfect fit is achieved and can change the color of the veneer by the color cement utilized.  Once properly position on the teeth, the dentist will permanently cement the porcelain veneers to your teeth. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating the bite and making any final adjustments in the veneer as necessary.

Porcelain veneers may last 10-15 years with proper care and regular dental visits.
