Dental Exams & Cleanings

Dental cleanings are usually painless, even if it is your first cleaning.  The American Dental Association recommends you see your dentist at least twice each year for a checkup.  Your initial dental examination will include a comprehensive dental examination and radiographs (x-rays) as needed. Your oral condition will dictate the treatment needed to “clean” your teeth. Many times this can be accomplished at the first visit.

The dental hygienist utilizes special tools to clean your teeth.  The cleaning includes:

  • Removal of tartar (calculus)
  • Removal of plaque
  • Teeth polishing

This service may entail root planning and curettage if the level of calculus and plaque is excessive or extends below the level of your gingival tissue(gums).

After x-rays of your teeth are taken or reviewed, then the doctor will perform a series of exams and screenings that include:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays for decay, root position,  tumors, cysts and bone loss
  • Evaluation for gum disease - any signs of periodontal disease
  • Screen for oral cancer - check face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums
  • Look for decay or cracks - check all surfaces of the tooth for cracks or decay
  • Exam existing restoration - check filings, crowns, and other prior dental work

After the examination is complete a complete list of the findings are presented to the patient with recommendations for treatment, if any.
